Show Stigma the Red Card Campaign,
At Mind in Somerset, we believe that community sports have the power to promote mental health awareness and foster a supportive environment. That’s why we’re launching the Show Stigma the Red Card campaign, inviting rugby and football teams across Somerset to get involved and help us break down the stigma around mental health.
Our goal is to encourage as many teams as possible to wear an armband during matches throughout the week of and on World Mental Health Day, Saturday 10th October. The idea is to create visible signs that it’s okay to talk about mental health, that support is available, and that no one is alone.
Most importantly, we would like teams to share their team photos and match photos on social media, tagging us in them, so we can flood social media and spread this important message.
Even if some teams or players aren’t aware of the campaign or choose not to wear the band, their curiosity can spark vital conversations. When teams see others wearing the bands, it normalises talking about mental health and shows it’s okay not to be okay. It’s about creating a safe space, reinforcing that support is available and fostering a sense of belonging, core principles of grassroots sports.
By coming together in this way, we hope to strengthen community bonds and remind everyone that rugby, football and local sports are about more than just the game, they’re about connection,
