Mind in Somerset is committed to promoting and respecting equality, diversity, inclusivity, and belonging—both within our organisation and in the wider community.
We recognise the legal definition of gender established by the 2025 Supreme Court. At the same time, we want to acknowledge and understand the concern and anxiety this may cause for some people.
At Mind in Somerset, we believe it is important to recognise that some people are transgender, and that not everyone feels their gender can be defined within the traditional gender binary. Our employees and volunteers actively advocate for and support one another, and we strive to promote this approach throughout our work.
Mind in Somerset supports:
- Trans, non-binary, intersex, and gender fluid identities, alongside binary female and male identities.
- Trans, non-binary, intersex, and gender fluid team members and their allies.
As an employer, we are committed to supporting, promoting, and protecting our trans, non-binary, intersex, and gender fluid employees.
Our team and senior leadership encourage visible allyship, and we are committed to challenging behaviours that do not demonstrate respect.
The Equality Act 2010 protects individuals from harassment or victimisation on the basis of gender reassignment, sexual orientation, sex, and other protected characteristics.
Mind in Somerset encourages all team members to:
- Consider the treatment of trans, non-binary, intersex, and gender fluid people in line with our:
• Equality, diversity, inclusion, and belonging policies
• Bullying, harassment, victimisation, and code of conduct policies
• Training on these issues - Use confidential and supportive reporting channels for any experiences of discrimination, bullying, harassment, or victimisation.
- Ensure issues affecting trans, non-binary, and gender fluid team members, as well as people accessing our services, are addressed with respect.
- Approach discussions about trans rights and gender critical rights within Mind in Somerset in a respectful and constructive way.
We are an organisation of all, for all. We encourage our team, the people we support, and our allies to live out this ethos across our community.
Looking ahead, Mind in Somerset will continue to take part in consultations and advocate for inclusive policies.
If you would like to discuss any of this further, please contact our senior leadership at info@mindinsomerset.org.uk or call 01823 334 906.
